AP STATISTICS

AP Statistics is equivalent to a one-semester, non-calculus-based introductory college statistics course. It covers collecting and analyzing data, probability and statistical inference, and is useful for a wide range of majors, including economics, business, psychology, the social sciences, health sciences, engineering and data science.

Who Is AP Statistics For?

The only background College Board recommends for AP Statistics is a first-year algebra course; no calculus is needed. That makes it a great first AP course for students new to the program.

AP Statistics Units and Exam Weighting

UnitExam weighting
1. Exploring One-Variable Data and Collecting Data20–30%
2. Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions15–25%
3. Inference for Categorical Data: Proportions15–25%
4. Inference for Quantitative Data: Means10–20%
5. Regression Analysis10–20%

AP Statistics Exam Format

The exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app and lasts 3 hours. Students are expected to use a graphing calculator with statistical functions, and a formula sheet and tables are provided.

SectionQuestionsTimeWeighting
Section 1: Multiple choice421 hr 30 min50%
Section 2: Free response4 (10 points each)1 hr 30 min50%

One free-response question focuses directly on statistical inference; the others are multi-part questions that combine several areas of the course.

2027 exam date: May 11, 2027 (per the College Board calendar). The exam is scored from 1 to 5.

Tips for a High AP Statistics Score

  • Answer in context: writing "p = 0.03" isn't enough; explain what the result means for the situation in the question.
  • Show every inference step: hypotheses, checking conditions, the test statistic, the p-value and the conclusion are scored separately on free-response questions.
  • Use your graphing calculator well: running confidence intervals, significance tests and regressions quickly saves time, but calculator syntax (such as "1-PropZTest") is not an acceptable answer on its own.
  • Study experimental and sampling design: random selection, sources of bias and the difference between observational studies and experiments come up often.

AP Statistics Preparation with One World

We offer one-to-one private lessons, 3–5 student group classes, a 12-hour Fast Track and a 6-hour Boot Camp for AP Statistics, at our Beşiktaş center or online. Our study plans follow the redesigned five-unit course and the new exam format. Compare the options on our AP course packages page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need calculus for AP Statistics?

No. AP Statistics doesn't require calculus; the recommended background is first-year algebra.

Which calculator do I need for the AP Statistics exam?

You're expected to use a College Board-approved graphing calculator with statistical functions. Check the current list on College Board's calculator policy page.

AP Statistics or AP Calculus?

For engineering, physics or mathematics, AP Calculus is usually the priority. For economics, business, psychology, social sciences or health sciences, AP Statistics is very valuable. Many students take both. See our AP Calculus page for details.
