The AP program offers two economics courses: AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics. Each is equivalent to a one-semester introductory college economics course, and both are strong choices for students aiming for economics, business, finance, international relations, political science or industrial engineering.

Macroeconomics vs. Microeconomics
| AP Macroeconomics | AP Microeconomics | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | The economy as a whole: growth, inflation, unemployment, monetary and fiscal policy | Individual decision-makers: consumers, firms and markets |
| Typical question | If the central bank raises interest rates, what happens to inflation and employment? | If a tax is placed on a product, how do price, quantity and welfare change? |
| Recommended background | None | None |
Neither course is a prerequisite for the other, and you can take both exams. Most students planning to study economics start with microeconomics, because markets and supply and demand make macroeconomics easier to follow.

Tips for a High AP Economics Score
- Make graphing automatic: correctly labeled graphs (axes, curves, equilibrium, shifts) earn their own points on free-response questions.
- Write out chains of effects step by step: for example, "interest rates rise → investment falls → aggregate demand falls → the price level falls". Show every link.
- State direction and variable clearly: write "increases" or "decreases", not "changes", and say which curve shifts which way.
- Use the reading period to plan: in the 10-minute reading period, read every part of each question and plan your graphs.
