AP PSYCHOLOGY

AP Psychology is equivalent to a one-semester introductory college psychology course. It's ideal for students aiming for psychology, counseling, neuroscience, education, sociology or health sciences. Because it has no prerequisites, students heading into other fields who are interested in psychology often take it to add another AP course.

Section I: Multiple choice751 hr 30 min67%
Section II: Free response21 hr 10 min33%

The free-response section always has two question types:

  1. Article Analysis Question (AAQ): analyze the methods, variables and findings of a research article.
  2. Evidence-Based Question (EBQ): develop and justify a psychological argument using evidence from the sources provided.

Both sections test applying psychological concepts, evaluating qualitative and quantitative research methods, and interpreting data shown in tables and graphs.

2027 exam date: May 14, 2027 (per the College Board calendar). The exam is scored from 1 to 5.

Tips for a High AP Psychology Score

  • Know research methods inside out: independent and dependent variables, sampling, operational definitions, correlation vs. causation and research ethics come up constantly, in both the AAQ and multiple-choice questions.
  • Apply concepts to scenarios: questions rarely ask for definitions; they describe a situation and ask which concept it illustrates.
  • Practice reading graphs and tables: you need to interpret research data quickly and accurately.
  • Practice evidence-based writing: on the EBQ, claims that aren't clearly tied to the sources provided don't earn points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AP Psychology an easy AP course?

With no prerequisites and no heavy math, many students find it accessible. But it covers a lot of material, and the redesigned exam puts more weight on research methods and evidence-based writing, so a high score still takes steady work.

Should I take AP Psychology if I'm not going to study psychology?

Yes, you can. It's useful for any field involving human behavior, such as business, marketing, medicine, education and the social sciences, and it's a good way to add to your total number of AP courses.

Do I need a calculator for AP Psychology?

No. AP Psychology isn't a math-heavy exam, but you are expected to interpret research data in tables and graphs and understand basic statistical concepts such as mean, standard deviation and correlation.
