Who Is AP Biology For?
College Board recommends completing high school biology and chemistry before AP Biology. Students already familiar with cells, heredity and basic chemistry get off to a smoother start.
AP Biology Units and Exam Weighting
| Unit | Exam weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Chemistry of Life | 8–11% |
| 2. Cells | 10–13% |
| 3. Cellular Energetics | 12–16% |
| 4. Cell Communication and Cell Cycle | 10–15% |
| 5. Heredity | 8–11% |
| 6. Gene Expression and Regulation | 12–16% |
| 7. Natural Selection | 13–20% |
| 8. Ecology | 10–15% |
AP Biology Exam Format
The exam is hybrid digital: multiple-choice questions are answered in the Bluebook app and free-response answers are handwritten in a paper booklet. It lasts 3 hours. Calculators are allowed and a formula sheet is provided.
| Section | Questions | Time | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section I: Multiple choice | 60 | 1 hr 30 min | 50% |
| Section II: Free response | 6 (2 long, 4 short) | 1 hr 30 min | 50% |
Questions go beyond recall: they ask you to explain biological processes, interpret diagrams and graphs, evaluate experimental results, calculate with data and support claims with evidence.
2027 exam date: May 3, 2027 (per the College Board calendar). The exam is scored from 1 to 5.
Tips for a High AP Biology Score
- Learn processes as cause and effect: questions often ask what happens to a system when something changes. Understand the processes rather than memorizing terms.
- Practice graphing and data analysis: free-response questions frequently ask you to draw and interpret graphs.
- Master experimental design: be able to clearly explain independent and dependent variables, control groups and hypotheses.
- Practice the core calculations: ratios, percentages, Hardy–Weinberg and chi-square calculations from the formula sheet appear on the exam.
- Prioritize evolution and cellular energetics: these units carry the most weight.
AP Biology Preparation with One World
We offer one-to-one private lessons, 3–5 student group classes, a 12-hour Fast Track and a 6-hour Boot Camp for AP Biology, at our Beşiktaş center or online. Alongside teaching the content, we put special emphasis on AP-style data analysis and free-response practice. Compare the options on our AP course packages page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there prerequisites for AP Biology?
College Board has no formal prerequisites, but recommends high school biology and chemistry first.
Can I use a calculator on the AP Biology exam?
Yes, College Board-approved calculators are allowed. Check the current list on College Board's calculator policy page.
Is AP Biology enough for a pre-med or medical application?
AP Biology is a strong course for health science applications, but it isn't enough on its own. Universities usually look at AP Chemistry and math as well. We can plan which AP courses you need for your target country and university as part of our AP preparation guidance.
