TEOFL PREPARATION MATERIALS
At One Worldist, we have a specially tailored, in-house curriculum designed by our experienced TOEFL tutors and staff. In addition to this curriculum, teachers use a vast array of materials for their lessons. The difficulty and choice of the materials depends on the student’s level and needs.
In addition to the vocabulary, writing, reading, listening and speaking materials prepared by the teacher, other core materials and books that we use are produced and written by the following companies: Barron’s, Cambridge, ETS and Longman.
Longman:
Longman materials are used for students who are of a pre-intermediate to intermediate level of English. Longman also has great vocabulary and grammar activities.
ETS:
ETS is the company that makes the TOEFL, so no preparation is complete without including some of their exercises.
Cambridge:
Cambridge makes difficult tests, so taking and succeeding with Cambridge materials is a good way to prepare for the actual test.
Barron’s:
Barron’s exercises and tests have a wide range of difficulty, so they are used throughout the course.
**In-class computer simulations are done in order to prepare the student for the flow and duration of the real test.
Some students know exactly what score they need to get from the TOEFL while others need assistance in determining what score is right for them and what timeframe that can be achieved in.
For students who know what score they need, we firs determine the student’s level, which will tell us what score the student would get were he or she to sit the test today. Then, we put into action an education program based on those results and the needs of the student as perceived by our professional TOEFL tutors.
For students who are not sure what score they need, or are not sure of their chances for success, we administer a level test and TOEFL placement test, after which we can determine the approximate amount of time and work that the student is looking at.
After administering a level test and TOEFL placement test, over 95 percent of our students who come to lessons regularly and do all their homework achieve their TOEFL goals within the timeframe that we specify. The remaining five percent achieve their goals after a bit more work.
