TOEFL ONE TO ONE LESSON

At One Worldist, students work with native English speakers who are professionally certified, experienced exam tutors. 

One-to-one lessons can be done at our Taksim or Kozyatağı branch, or at the student's home or workplace. Lesson days and times can be arranged according to the student's availability. Lessons can start at 8:30am in the morning at the earliest and 10pm in the evening at the latest.

Before starting a program, determining a student’s English level and setting him or her on the right path is crucial to achieving fast, efficient success. At One Worldist, we have two paths, a pre-TOEFL program for students of low intermediate level and below, and a more advanced path for students of upper-intermediate level and above. Which path a student should be on is determined by a TOEFL and English level placement test, which we offer free of charge.

TOEFL Preparatory Program:

The TOEFL Preparatory Program is designed for students who get a 60 or above on their TOEFL placement test. Such students generally have at least a strong intermediate English level.

Reading:

The goal of the Reading program is to identify which types of TOEFL questions the student has success with, and which ones need to be improved upon. An additional goal is effective time management so that the student is not left with unanswered questions at the end of the test. Time management includes skimming for answers, learning POE (process of elimination) tactics, and making educated guesses about questions for which the answer is not 100 percent known.

Writing:

Students will learn and internalize a vast array of vocabulary on everyday topics that will come up in the actual test. This vocabulary is useful not only for writing, but also for the other modules, particularly speaking. For the first writing task, students will practice fusing what they hear in audio clips and what they read into an organized essay. For task 2, the critical factors are organizing and implanting an outline in a quick fashion; using lots of different vocabulary; mastering complex sentence structures; and using effective examples. All of this will be practiced and mastered over the course of the program.

Listening:

The TOEFL listening requires a long attention span and great note taking skills. Students will practice TOEFL listening in order to retain their focus over an hour of note taking and sentence answering. Students must become accustomed to listening to topics that they are not familiar with and making educated guesses as to what the answers to difficult questions might be. Improving one’s listening skills is not easy, so methods of practicing listening both inside and outside of the classroom will be taught.

Speaking:

Students are expected to give concise, to-the-point answers about a variety of subjects. Timing is imperative, so time management must be internalized for each of the question types. Answers must be organized in short order, so effective techniques for gathering one’s thoughts and preparing relevant examples on the fly will be taught and practiced. Fluency is paramount, so students must feel confident talking about a variety of topics and using a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures.

Pre-TOEFL Program:

The pre-TOEFL program is for students who get a 60 or lesson on our TOEFL placement test. This program helps to develop students’ basic English while simultaneously preparing for TOEFL test topics.

Reading:

Students will begin by dissecting and understanding texts consisting of a variety of topics, but in a shorter, simpler, more approachable context than the actual TOEFL. This will give students a chance to learn the technique for finding answers quickly, as well as helping to practice skimming and scanning techniques.

Writing:

The TOEFL test has 2 writing tasks, both of which require the student to produce an organized, coherent, grammatically sound and vocabulary-rich essay. The first writing task, called the Integrated Writing, demands that students listen to a short audio, read a short paragraph, and combine them both to answer a question. For the second writing task, which is a standard 4-6 paragraph essay, students must have a wide range of vocabulary about a variety of topics. The strategies for and vocabulary related to these topics will be taught and practiced.

Listening:

The TOEFL listening is long and difficult. Students must know how to take notes quickly and effectively. To this end, the pre-TOEFL module focuses on effective note taking skills, as well as how to develop overall listening accuracy.  

Speaking:

Students must speak clearly, concisely and in an organized manner in order to get a good TOEFL score. Timing is one of the most difficult aspects of TOEFL speaking, but developing vocabulary and confidence is also critical. Our pre-TOEFL speaking module has a vocabulary and idiomatic speech focus that will help students develop effective answers to fundamental speaking topics.
