What is the TOEFL?
The TOEFL is a computer-based English language proficiency exam prepared by ETS (Educational Testing Service), a US-based exam preparation company. The TOEFL is one of the world’s most well-known exams for proving whether or not a non-native speaker has university-grade English proficiency. The TOEFL is accepted in more than 130 countries in more than 9,000 colleges and universities, among other agencies and other institutions.
What can I use the TOEFL for?
Students who take the TOEFL are aiming to:
- Study at an institution of higher learning (college, university, certification programs)
- Get into a program in which the target language is English (preparatory class for university)
- Graduate from a program in which the target language is English (graduating from a preparatory program)
- Earn an educational scholarship, certification, or for a raise in one’s job
- Prove their language proficiency
- Get a visa (for students and workers)
How long is the test?
The test is is approximately four and a half hours, including a half hour of check-in time.
How should I prepare for the test?
There are lots of books and online materials that a student can use to prepare for the TOEFL test. Working with a professionally certified, experienced TOEFL tutor will increase a students’ score and greatly enhance their likelihood of success. Students can learn how to increase vocabulary, correct pronunciation, improve speaking fluency, and learn how to manage time in the test.

When can I take the test?
The TOEFL is administered more than 50 times a year. Students can take the test as many times as they want, but the test cannot be taken more than once within a 12-day period. For exact test dates, click here:
How much does the TOEFL IBT cost?
The TOEFL costs $160, or approximately 350 TL in Turkey (depending on the dollar exchange rate).
How do I know what score I need?
Every institution has different requirements, so it is important to get such information from the institution’s website, or contact them directly.
How many score reports do I get after taking the test?
All students automatically get one online score report, and students can request a paper test before taking the exam (but not after). Before taking the test, students can ask ETS to submit up to four score reports to institutions of the students’ choosing. These score reports are included in the test application fee.
Can additional score reports be ordered?
Additional score reports can be ordered online for a cost of $19 USD. Reports are mailed four to seven days after payment is received.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
The test must be cancelled a minimum of 3 days in advance (test day not included). A half refund is given.
